Portland is probably better known for its dive bars and food carts, but there are a few places in town keeping it classy. We recently invited some Google Places contest winners out for a Night of Luxe to experience a couple of businesses that appeal to the finer part of the Portlander’s heart. Entrants in the contest got to choose between a night of manicures and martinis at Beauty Bar, or a manly pampering at The Modern Man Barber Shop.
As it ended up, fellas who opted to attend the Night of Luxe at Modern Man were given the choice between a hot towel shave or a haircut. Both services left everyone feeling relaxed and cleaned up.

Patrons of Modern Man are always treated to a cigar and a whiskey, which the Google Places event attendees thoroughly appreciated. John had this to say, "it is a superior barber shop with great atmosphere and attention to detail."
Fellas also had a variety of sandwiches from Petite Province to meet their manly appetites. Howard describes them as having “an amazing glaze of butter, along with fresh, delicious ingredients.”
Meanwhile, across the river over at Beauty Bar, those who opted to attend that portion of our Night of Luxe contest met-up for a happy hour special called “Manicures and Martinis.” Ladies could sample from a list of various cocktails as they mingled and took turns getting pampered.
Decorated with old hair dryers, pink striped accent walls, and old photos of ladies from the ‘50s, gals had a night spent catching up on gossip, sharing salon recommendations and enjoying hand massages with their martini & manicure specials.
One reviewer who goes by Aspiring Traveler described the bar in her review the following day: “The ‘beauty’ part of the title comes from the evening manicures and the retro hair dryer chairs, but there's nothing sissy about this place. Several men got manicures. This place is definitely more bar than beauty.”
Everyone had a delightful evening, and I’m sure we’ll find ourselves floating back to the memories of Night of Luxe as we start the holiday rush.
