David, originally from Hawaii, wound up in Portland working for Nike after finishing school in Spokane. Having grown up near the ocean, he tries to reconnect with the water through stand-up paddle surfing and completing his scuba diving certification. David loves to go out and explore the surrounding area when the weather is nice, and hit as many happy hour spots when it’s best to stay inside. He and his wife are drawn to Portland’s small city feel. When he’s not traveling, you may run into him in the Alphabet District or out on the slopes snowboarding this winter.
Share an ultimate insider tip for your city.
Get to any breakfast place before 9 a.m. and you'll have little to no wait. Get to a restaurant by 10 a.m. and expect a 45-minute to an hour wait.
If you could see any celebrity's reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
Jim Carrey's reviews would be fantastic. He is my hero.
What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
Doughnuts. Although i feel no guilt about it. I love doughnuts. My first job ever was working at a Krispy Kreme and I still say it was one of the most fun jobs I have ever had. Plus, I got to take home six doughnuts every shift I worked!
Do you have any pets?
Last year, my wife and I adopted two adorable kittens. Miel (French for honey) and Wana Palu (Hawaiian for soft sea urchin, pronounced Vah-nah Pah-loo) will walk around talking non-stop. Wana Palu, or Wana for short, is a medium hair and is the best thing to have in your lap on cold winter nights.
Tell us about some of your Best Evers.
Besaw’s: The drinks are great, and the specials each night are terrific. They make one of the few good-tasting meatloafs. On Friday and Saturday nights, they have a delicious chicken and waffles!
Piazza Italia: All of the food is amazing and the atmosphere is great. This has easily turned into my favorite restaurant in Portland.
Alotto Gelato: This is the best gelato on and around 23rd. All gelato is made with top ingredients, making the gelato absolutely divine. Order the small size and get two flavors? Sold.
Tanner Springs Park: Made to look like marshland, it has paths to walk on and select areas of grass to lay down upon and just enjoy the weather. Also, ducks and koi are in the water! This is a great place for us to enjoy the nice summer days of Portland.
