A native to Portland, Matthew has yet to find another place that has as much to offer as our Rose City. He boasts about the arts, entertainment, culture, incredible food, drink and music scenes, and how we have an ocean and mountain range within a 100-mile radius. You may run into him in the PSU area of downtown, playing urban golf or out having fun with his two boys.
What's your favorite thing about sharing reviews on Places?
I like promoting my hometown. I like giving kudos to places that are great, and calling others out when they need improvement. It's also a lot of fun to discover new places and share my local perspective on some places that a newcomer to the city may not be aware of.
If you could see any celebrity's reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
Tom Waits. I just know the music would be hot, the food tasty, and the atmosphere devoid of hipster.
What would your superpower be?
When I was a kid I would have said flight, but now... My superpower would be to instantly make a celebration pop up wherever I go, so it's always a party, and everyone's happy and having a great time.
What's your favorite Google event you've been to and why?
The wine tasting at Pour was awesome. Not only were the lamb sliders delicious and the wine divine, but it was a lot of fun to meet other Google folks.
Tell us about some of your Best Evers.
Piazza Italia: This isn't Americanized Italian food, it's the closest you can get to an Italian dining experience in the Rose City. The food is consistently excellent, the service friendly, the wines terrific. Only complaint is the accordionist can be annoying.
Ken’s Artisan Bakery: I have a theory: Some dark night in the misty past, "Ken" (if that is his real name) met the "Dark Lord" and sold his soul for the ability to make the perfect croissant.
Laurelhurst Theatre: There's really little to fault about the Laurelhurst. From the huge marquee neon sign to the chalkboard movie signs in front of the theaters, the place just screams "cool.” I remember riding my bike here, as it was one of the few places a teenager could afford going to. Now it's revamped for grown-ups and that makes me happy too.
La Merde: Le Merde is a gem. It's small, brick-walled, and nothing to speak of decor-wise. But in poor weather it's cozy and warm, and in warm weather, well, it gets bloody hot in there, but the drinks are cold. What makes La Merde particularly great is the fact that you can get a good portion of the Montage menu without having to wait for a table at Montage.
