The crowd at Threadgills watched intently as Geoff Thevenot, the four-time champion of the Austin Chronicle Adult Spelling Bee, asked for the origin of the word “embouchure.” The French word—meaning the position and use of the lips, tongue and teeth in playing a wind instrument—was all that stood between Geoff and reclaiming the spelling bee trophy.

Without hesitation, he spelled it flawlessly.

And since we all can remember the rush of excitement and pride that results from getting a gold star on a grade-school spelling test, the Austin Places team was on hand to cheer on the contestants and distribute our Best Ever buttons, which actually look a lot like spelling bee ribbons!

Between rounds, we also had fun chatting about some of the hardest-to-spell businesses in Austin. Icenhauer’s on Rainey Street topped a few people’s list, while food truck Kebabalicious threw others for a loop. All in all it was a bee-autiful time!
