Jeanette (also known as “Netta”) has been living in New York City for more than three years. She loves her dogs, craft projects, bad reality TV, dancing and exploring her neighborhood (Greenpoint, Brooklyn). What brought her to NYC? “I moved here because I wanted to work the hardest I ever had, I wanted to fit in by not fitting in, and I wanted to meet the world's biggest minds. I wanted to live the dream before it was too late to follow it.” Hear, hear!
Can you share an ultimate insider tip for New York?
New York has so many secrets it would be difficult to choose the best one. I think the best kept secret is that locals are actually really nice people, they just specialize in minding their own business because they spend so much time in other people's personal space. Go to far away neighborhoods if you're here visiting. If you live here, ask every one of your friends where their favorite place to do XYZ is, and then make it your mission to do the things on their lists. Soon you'll have a whole host of new places to try and fall in love with. That's the best thing about New York: There is ALWAYS something new to try.
Indeed! And Google Places can help you keep track. What’s your favorite thing about sharing reviews on Places?
I like how easy it is to do while mobile, and I like that my reviews can be short and sweet. Sometimes you don't want or need an 800-word long review to know whether or not a place is going to do the job for whatever it is that you need. A succinct, to-the-point review is sometimes best.
Any embarrassing moments you’d like to share?
Probably the most embarrassing thing(s) that I do are go up to people I think I know from somewhere and hound them about knowing them, until they either say, "I was on The Real World," or "I'm in The Roots." I just hate not being able to remember where I know someone from. And I wish both those conversations had ended in friendships, but ... I bet they get that all the time. Oh well.
Their loss, right? Care to share some of your local favorites with us?
Pies -n- Thighs: The biscuits are not to be missed. Perhaps the best biscuits I've ever had (and this is from someone who has had a long love affair with Bojangles). The chicken is also not to be missed, and their collard greens are even on point — I’ve seen those messed up colossally so many times. If you're from the South and homesick, give them a visit!
Carmine's Pizzeria: Love Carmine's, especially their calzone (enough for 2 or 3 meals). Great service here, definitely an old school neighborhood vibe. The boyfriend loves all the different kinds of pizza, especially experimenting with the calamari pizza.
Pinkerton Wine Bar: Cheese plate, CHECK. Delicious wine selection, CHECK. Interesting owner, CHECK. Outdoor seating, CHECK. Not pretentious at all, DOUBLE CHECK. Super affordable, TRIPLE CHECK. Check, please!
