While Googlers all over the world took part in Pride celebrations, in New York Pride-goers were not only celebrating Pride but also the recent legalization of marriage equality in the state. The United States’s gay rights movement started more than 40 years ago right here in New York, so it was truly a momentous — and joyous — occasion.
For our part, we were definitely psyched when a group of Gayglers — the name for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Google employees — from the NYC office stopped by to get some NYC Pride Emoji magnets to share with their friends (after they’d marched in the Pride parade, of course):
By the end of the day, more than 3,000 New Yorkers had stopped by our booth to receive a NYC Pride Emoji Magnet. While Mr. Emoji was a HUGE hit, many New Yorkers also seemed to think he was a piece of toast (New Yorkers = brunch obsessed!). For the record, he is not.
One Places feature that Pride-goers found especially useful? Adding a custom search to the Google Places app home screen, i.e. “LGBT” or “LGBT bar”. These custom searches are handy shortcuts when you’re always looking for particular kinds of places on the go.
